Bíó Paradís – the lonely cinema at the edge of the world

We at Bíó Paradís need your help. We’re looking for friends – people like you, lovers of independent and art-house films, fans of Iceland and its cinema – to help us reach our goals and solidify our future.

Who are we?

Bíó Paradís is a nonprofit art-house cinema in Reykjavík, Iceland. In fact, it’s the first and only art-house cinema in Iceland. It’s the home of the Icelandic film community. It plays a vital role in developing Iceland’s young but growing film culture.

Six years ago we were only a dream. Commercial cinema had fled to the suburbs and there was nowhere to see foreign and independent films, cult films and classics on the big screen. So the professional filmmaking guilds came together, convinced the city to throw in a bit of money, and took over a defunct cinema in the heart of downtown Reykjavík. In these six years we’ve managed to convert to digital projection, nurture relationships with filmmakers and content providers, and build a small but loyal audience.

Here are some of the things we do:

• We run school screenings to develop film literacy among Reykjavík’s schoolchildren.
• We host the Reykjavík International Film Festival, the Stockfish Film Festival and Reykjavík Shorts & Docs.
• We work with foreign embassies and consulates to program annual retrospectives of their countries’ best films.
• We host all kinds of workshops, master classes, seminars and panel discussions.
• We host art exhibits and live musical performances.
• We screen new Icelandic films that would otherwise never find a theatrical audience.
• We’ve tripled the number of foreign films playing in Iceland.

So we’ve come a long way but we still have a long way to go. The challenges we face are too great to be met by our modest public endowment, so we’re reaching out to you to help us get to the next level and maintain our role as one of Iceland’s premier cultural institutions.

Here are some of the things we desperately need to do:

• Renovate – new upholstery, design upgrades, new amplifiers
• Renew and sustain our marketing efforts to build our audience
• Create a community of supporters and patrons

Rescue Squad – buy a seat for 500 EUR each

With this level of support, we will honor your generosity by engraving the back of one of our seats with your name or the name of someone you wish.
