Elísabet og tvítug dóttir hennar lifa í frið og spekt í belgískri sveitasælu. En veröld Elísabetar hrynur dag einn þegar lögreglan upplýsir hana að dóttir hennar hafi yfirgefið land til að berjast með ISIS í Sýrlandi. Hún fer fljótlega að rannsaka málið og kemst að ýmsu um tvöfalt líf dótturinnar– og ákveður á endanum að fara til Sýrlands að bjarga henni.
Rachid Bouchareb er Frakki af alsírskum ættum og fjalla ófáar myndir hans með einum eða öðrum hætti um líf innflytjenda og það sögulega samhengi sem þeir spretta upp úr. Hann hefur leikstýrt tíu myndum í fullri lengd og þrjár þeirra hafa verið tilnefndar til Óskarsverðlauna sem besta erlenda myndin –Ryk lífsins (Poussières de vie) árið 1996, Heimamenn (Indigènes) árið 2006 og loks Handan laganna (Hors-la-loi) árið 2010. Myndin er heimsfrumsýnd á kvikmyndahátíðinni í Berlín – aðeins tveimur dögum áður en Stockfish hefst.

Q&A screenings with director Rachid Bouchareb present will be held on Wednesday February 24th at 20:15 and Thursday February 25th at 18:00.
Elisabeth lives with her twenty-year-old daughter Elodie in an idyllic house in the Belgian countryside. But when the police inform her that her daughter has left the country to join the ranks of the Islamic State in Syria, she is understandably shocked. Soon she begins to investigate and finds out more and more about the double life her daughter had been leading. Eventually she sets off by herself to Syria to bring her daughter home.
Rachid Bouchareb is a Frenchman of Algerian descent and many of his films deal with the immigrant experience and its historical roots. He has directed ten feature films and three of them have been nominated for the Academy Awards as the Best Foreign Language Film. All of those films were been nominated on behalf of Algeria and no other African director has been nominated more than once in this category. The nominated films were Dust of Life (Poussières de vie) in 1996, Days of Glory (Indigènes) in 2006 and finally Beyond the Law (Hors-la-loi) in 2010. He was the guest of honour at Stockfish last year. The film will have its world premiere at the Berlinale – only two days before the start of Stockfish.
