Dramat rozgrywa się na tle zimnej wojny w latach pięćdziesiątych, w Polsce, Berlinie, Jugosławii i Paryżu. Film rywalizował o Złotą Palmę na festiwalu filmowym w Cannes w 2018 roku, gdzie Pawlikowski zdobył nagrodę dla najlepszego reżysera.
