Heimildamynd Jóhanns Jóhannssonar, Last and First Men var frumsýnd á Berlínarhátíðinni 2020 og vakti mikla athygli, enda var Jóhann gríðarlega virt tónskáld sem hér var að stíga sín fyrstu skref á bak við myndvélina. Stórleikonan Tilda Swinton er sögumaður og leiðir áhorfendur í gegnum undraheiminn sem Jóhann skapaði.

Tvær billjónir ára í framtíðinni stendur mannkynið frammi fyrir yfirvofandi útrýmingu. Stakir og súrrealískir minnisvarðar eru nánast það eina sem stendur eftir og varpa skilaboðum sínum inn í öræfin.

Í myndinni flökkum við um svæði í niðurníðslu þar sem sorglegir atburðir hafa gerst – staðir hlaðnir táknrænni merkingu. Í gegnum myndina skynjum við nærveru, einhverskonar vitund sem er að reyna að hafa samband við okkur.

“By detaching them from their historical context, Jóhansson finds something very unsettling in these sculptures.” – The Guardian

“Last and First Men finally stands as a brutally beautiful memorial to his own life and artistry, ready to be reinterpreted and appropriated by any audiences who stumble upon it in years to come.” – Variety

English

Last and First Men was composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s first and last foray behind the camera. This magical and hypnotic documentary first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2020 to wide acclaim. Tilda Swinton’s narrator leads the audience through the wondrous world Jóhann created.

Two billion years ahead of us, a future race of humans finds itself on the verge of extinction. Almost all that is left in the world are lone and surreal monuments, beaming their message into the wilderness.

The film explores zones of decay and ruin where great tragedies have occurred – places charged with symbolism. Throughout the film we sense a spectral presence, an entity that is attempting to communicate with us.
